You have not installed any font packages, please do that, also you could try my new 3.3.3.1 packages (still under developpment, since it is the first time i build something as big as X for debian, but they should work) I build them because i was experiencing similar problems, i guess it is some library incompatibility, or another such thing. You can get them from debian incoming or from sunsite.auc.dk/local/os/linux/apus/DEB-APUS also they got some accel stuff in them for the fbdev, not sure about your graphic cards, but there is accel for mach64 based boards, so ...
