First, there is no such thing as a GPF. Got that? do you see a blue screen anywhere? :)
Anyway, I think I experienced the same thing (KERNEL PANIC :) with the base system. I believe upgrading dpkg (and associated packages) first solved things. Rememeber to get APT as well, to make sure everythings nice and up-to-date. Good luck, Peter
