Might be a problem with the X server on this machine - if the screen saver kicks in and starts running code that hangs up your X server, the machine might power down after a while (the PMU getting confused because the processor isn't handling its interrupts anymore). Try disabling xscreensaver (or just those screensaver modules that use GL) to test this. Caveat: I've not noticed this behavior on PowerPC but ix86, and on that architecture, the machine just hangs hard instead of powering down.
