speaking of xorg, is it in sarge or sid for ppc yet im still runnung xfree86 - but im assuming one magic day ill have an enormous update as xorg takes over and everything is compiled against it - and consequently repackaged

Remind me never to challenge your advice again. ;-) Somehow Xorg decided to start looking for its config file in /root, and that's why it wasn't getting the picture.
