This has now started working after I specified the framebuffer resolution on the kernel command-line. I also disabled the VGA console support, but this didn't have any effect. One other thing I have seen is if gdm/X11 is stopped while on a virtual console (e.g. /etc/init.d/gdm stop on tty1) the framebuffer is corrupted, but if I stop gdm from within itself (Actions->Reboot) there is no corruption.
