I remember this being something to do with HAL polling the IDE CD-ROM. See http://bugs.debian.org/286820 . To work around it, you can save the following snippet as /etc/hal/fdi/local_disablecdrom.fdi (I guess you can name it whatever you want as long as it goes into that directory).
