These applications would do sound in different ways. I believe that kscd
expects to be able to just tell the CD-ROM drive to play and take care of
the audio link. However, Apple hasn't put analog audio cables on the
internal drives in ages. You need a CD player that can read the CDDA data
from the disc and play it as an audio file. I know xmms can do that. Most
of the other modern audio players can, too. Even kscd may have it as an
option these days. I haven't tried it in ages.

The DVD players have to decode the audio before playing it, so it's already
being read as data and played through the sound device, as shown in the
lsof output you included.
