Thanks, Charles! Could I humbly suggest that for a change as significant as this, it would be worth asking for feedback on debian-devel and debian-user as well? It could be that there are users who will be significantly affected by this but who don't read the -policy list. Then again, there may well be silence or approval from those lists too.
