FWIW, I applied the patch because I also did my own research some times ago when I decided of some style guidelines for the Debian Administrator Handbook (mostly following the Chicago Manual of Style). And I came to the same conclusion. And I got similar advice from a friend who's teaching English in France. > singular they.
