This proposal would change the virtual package name mp3-encoder to music-encoder or audio-encoder, allowing ripping tools to depend on music-encoder rather than the various available tools.
As mentioned in the bug, the problem is that the interface for an audio-encoder virtual package is undefined. Those encoder programs all provide different interfaces and different outputs, meaning that an encoding tool cannot usefully just depend on audio-encoder and call a standard interface that would be provided by any package providing audio-encoder. They still need specific logic to support particular programs, and hence dependencies or recommendations for those specific programs. I am therefore rejecting this proposal. (It may separately be a good idea to clean up other virtual packages that have similar problems, but that's outside the scope of this particular bug.) If you disagree with the rejection of this proposal for reasons that weren't raised in the prior bug discussion, please raise them in this bug. If you disagree with the rejection of this proposal for reasons already raised in the bug, the path of appeal for a Policy proposal rejection is to the tech-ctte. See http://www.debian.org/devel/tech-ctte for how to make an appeal to the tech-ctte. -- Russ Allbery ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) <http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
