I had the problem when once I wrote a script that was calling /etc/init.d/sysklogd which called start-stop-daemon. Now /sbin/ was not in the path of the calling user (it was news) and so I had to set the PATH myself before the init script. I do not think this is how it is meant to be, given that /sbin/ is probably not in the typical user PATH setting for a reason. And it is not the default anyway. Just some input on that.
