I can guess what you've done, and it sounds quite cool, but I'm not about to do it for fetchmail for a couple of reasons: I'm not the fetchmail maintainer and have no desire to be, and I'm hoping that in the near future non-US might at long last be able to merge with (us-)main. In the meantime, the small diff to the configure.in file and the tiny diffs to the debian/rules and debian/control files are sufficient to build a fetchmail-ssl package, so I see that as the easier route.
