Erhard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Debian Bug Tracking System <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [PROPOSAL] handling missing stuff in /var/local X-Mailer: reportbug 0.27 Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 18:01:05 +0200 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Package: debian-policy Version: 3.0.1.1 Severity: normal Add to section 3.1.2: /usr/local is local admin territory. Whatever the local admin does in or below /usr/local, must not affect the operation of even parts of a package. Thus, no package may depend on the existence of anything below /usr/local, even if it created the directory itself. It may not even depend on the existence of /usr/local. The motivation for this proposal is found in bug #44682. I then realized (poked by Edward Betts ;-) that policy is unclear on this... it is allowed for a package to create dirs below /usr/local, but policy is mum about what should happen when such dirs are removed by the admin. Comments welcome. Of course, rephrasings are welcome to... ;-) Bye, J PS: I am not (yet) a maintainer... but I gathered from past discussions on this that anyone can make a proposal, but only maintainers can second. (I just now read proposal.text ... but I propose this anyway... it's necessary, so sue me >;-) -- System Information Debian Release: potato Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux sanctum 2.2.12 #1 Mon Sep 6 05:43:29 CEST 1999 i686 --------------------------------------- Received: (at 44922-done) by bugs.debian.org; 6 Nov 1999 21:31:45 +0000 Received: (qmail 17140 invoked from network); 6 Nov 1999 21:15:11 -0000 Received: from mserv1c.u-net.net (195.102.240.33) by master.debian.org with SMTP; 6 Nov 1999 21:15:11 -0000 Received: from [195.102.196.44] (helo=polya) by mserv1c.u-net.net with esmtp (Exim 2.10 #35) id 11kD9x-0005Qp-00; Sat, 6 Nov 1999 21:14:05 +0000 Received: from jdg by polya with local (Exim 3.03 #1 (Debian)) id 11kD9q-0000Vf-00; Sat, 06 Nov 1999 21:13:58 +0000 Subject: Fixed in debian-policy 3.1.0.0 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1999 21:13:58 +0000 (GMT) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL60 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From: Julian Gilbey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> These bugs have been fixed in debian-policy 3.1.0.0; changelog follows.
