I think putting the md5sums in the package sounds like a good thing --
should dpkg-buildpackage do it?

Sure: all through '93 my debian developer's system was a 386 DX/25 with a
200M harddisk. But at that time dpkg was just a glint in Ian's eye... (or
rather, a perl :).
