If you've got a hierarchy of things e.g. /root/news-reader/strn, then
why not just work your way up until you find it. In your example you'd 
look successively in:

        /root/news-reader/strn/nntpserver
        /root/news-reader/nntpserver
        /root/nntpserver

This is a bit like the much criticized default mechanism in X. Are
there lessons to be learnt from that ?
