The frontend is the part that the user sees: either a userinterface (console,web,X11), or a non-interactive frondend (LDAP, SQL, text, etc). You can get to the configuration space in three ways: 1) the configmodule can interface with the frontend 2) link with the library that implements the configuration space. This is actually what the frontend will do 3) use a utility program dpkg-vars to make your queries or updates. (usefull for scripts). Wichert.
