Hi, Firstly, I apologize, I reacted too strongly. DGMS> What this means, as I understand it, is that psgml and vm don't DGMS> byte-compile anything if make isn't installed.
This is correct. DGMS> Since vm and psgml are _large_ packages, I think their elisp files DGMS> should_ be byte-compiled, and our new debian-emacsen policy DGMS> suggest this (but it's up to the maintainer, of course, to DGMS> decide). Hmm. I guess I would agree. I am uploading a new version of psgml that tries to byte compile if make is not available. The preference is for make to be used if available, but it shall try and byte compile in the absence of make. Vm is harder, since VM truly uses the functionality of make to order the compilation. But I shall try to get as much of vm compiled as possible too. I think I second your request: what are the opinions about making emacsen add-on packages depend on make? In the old days this dependency was relegated to the maintainers machine, snd thus irrelevant; but now if it is to be required on every machine the package installs on ... manoj -- Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night, I can see paradise by the dashboard light.
