I'm also in favor of switching to a vcs dealing better with branch and the only modern vcs i know is git. So i would welcomed a switch to git because dealing with 4 branches is a pain at the moment. Both are vlc > upstream developers. I think that indeed makes vlc special. Except that it's a normal package. It's just a big package because there is 70 odd builddeps and 28 binary packages.
