Try to use alsamixer NON gui version. I´ve got some i945 Boards here with the same problem. I installed 2.6.17 with intel HD audio enabled and alsamixerhui showed me no mic. But with pur console-alsamixer I got the input tabs and I could use my microphone with skype.
