Backporting to stable is basically possible, it may involve a bit of work,
depending on the package you want to backport.
I have no experience with xine.

If you have enough bandwidth I would suggest to point your apt-get line to
testing and install from there directly (not tried though).
This will normally install some new packages, but it won't do a full
distribution upgrade.
