This package uses qmake. It appears debhelper has support for qmake and passes LDFLAGS on to the qmake generated Makefile using QMAKE_LFLAGS_RELEASE and QMAKE_LFLAGS_DEBUG. It might be that the generated Makefile in this case uses a different variable for passing flags to the linker. I suggest you look at the generated Makefile for some hints.
