Seems like a typical case with GNOME project stuff.

Do you know if there are something what might contribute to potential problems 
with --as-needed, like outdated toolchain?

So far we're reluctant to use --as-needed where it may be beneficial because 
in theory it might break something. However what's the practical likehood of 
that?

Do we know any particular example of --as-needed incompatibility to look into 
and analyse?
