No, not *completely*. You can move the files that get modified, build everything and move them back in the clean target. That's a common trick. Another one is to copy all the files in a subdirectory (say, cp -va src tgt), build the package there and just remove that subdirectory in the clean target once you're done. This way, the original sources are kept intact.
