Unfortunately, it would appear that using kanji characters in a man page is non-trivial as the encoding for English man pages seems to default to ISO-8859-1.
I've scoured the documentation but can't find anything on how to set a specific encoding for a man page --- can anyone point me at instructions on how to do this? Note that this is *not* a ja localised man page.
