I'm replying because I wrote the templates. :) The problem is that the long description is not contained in the *.changes files that the "importer" process is parsing. The *.diff.gz file would need to be unpacked and the description distilled from the debian/control file. I'd know how to unpack gz files (import gzip) but don't have a proper parser for diff files at hand (I don't suppose that the difflib does that).
