It might be a good idea to acknowledge previous NMUs when you are becoming the new maintainer now, so I suggest you have a look at the previous NMUs and see if you agree to them and then maybe incorporate the changes into your changelog entry (this is the way I prefer, though building with -v option is also possible). I am very keen on seeing such software in debian as it can be used in schools. If nobody wants to work things out with you, feel free to ping me tonight again (or poke me on IRC, nickname "white"), otherwise you might find somebody with more spare time today.
