Could you run $(MAKE) test in debian/rules?  I think it's best to do that
whenever possible just to make sure nothing strange has happened and I
notice that this package provides a fair number of tests.  Also, while
you're changing the package, you may want to change the -$(MAKE) realclean
as I mentioned my previous message.
