I would highly suggest against modifying /etc/inittab.
It looks interesting, and I am putting it on my list of things to try, but
I would be very upset if installing the package did anything to my
inittab. I am currently using a mix of agetty, mingetty, and fbgetty on
my vt's (mostly for testing purposes), and mgetty for my modems. My
current preference is mingetty for vt's, but fbgetty can be fun to play
with.

No qingy is a replacement for mingetty, or for the vt portion of agetty.
Qingy does not replace true getty.
getty on a debian system is actually agetty, which supports both dumb modem
connections and VTs.
Real getty supports ony serial lines (dumb modems).
Quingy and mingetty only work for VTs.
Nevertheless, you can use quingy as a drop-in replacement for debian's getty
if you are not using serial terminals.
