The .dsc file is the source package, more precisely, the master control file of the source package: try using 'less' on it, it mainly lists the other required files (orig.tar.gz and diff.gz) with checksums. The dsc file is the one that is signed and is tamper proof, which ensures the checksums can be used to verify the other files.
