I am one of the upstream authors of Audacity (a free cross-platform sound editor). Another upstream author, Josh Haberman, is the current Debian maintainer of audacity.
Josh is no longer as active in Debian as he used to be, and is planning to sponsor me as a new maintainer for audacity. I have been a Debian user and admin for about five years, but this is my first time creating packages for public distribution. I have prepared Debian packages for the new upstream version 1.2.0: http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~mbrubeck/debian/ I've already asked for Josh's feedback, but I'd also appreciate advice from debian-mentors. Please let me know if you have any comments! Note: I'm aware of the lintian warnings about .cvsignore files and obsolete autotools files. These will be fixed upstream.
