Look more closely - the processor-specific versions just drop in and
replace the generic versions of the libraries.  All the user has to do
is install whichever version is appropriate for their CPU.

What Atlas is actually doing is altering /etc/ld.so.conf - see the
README.Debian in one of the optimised packages.  It may be that for your
library you can just use the built-in libc mechanism (which are
mentioned in the Atlas README.Debian).
