I've CC'd the debian-mentors list in hopes that some NMs or candidate NMs will volunteer. I offer to sponsor any uploads.
I've also CC'd the maintainers of the out-of-date packages. I think we need to toss out all the task-gnome-* packages. They shouldn't be task packages anyway. I propose the following meta-packages: gnome-desktop - Pulls in GNOME core desktop functionality gnome-applications - Pulls in (most) GNOME Fifth-toe apps gnome-network - Pulls in network-related GNOME apps (from GNOME *and* Fifth-toe) gnome-games[1] - Pulls in all GNOME games gnome-dev - Pulls in all GNOME development packages [1] - I see this one already exists. It should be changed to Depend on all GNOME games, not just the ones from the gnome-games source package. That's 28 packages that need to be uploaded (plus the meta-packages). Looks like a lot of work, but i think we can do it. I think we should focus on getting GNOME up-to-date first; most of the Fifth-toe apps aren't that important. Unfortunately, there is another problem which may be even bigger, and that is the gettext problem Christian brought up. I don't know what we're going to have to do here. I doubt we can expect upstream to resolve the issue anytime soon. If it's decided that NMUs are appropriate, i can get all these done in a day, if necessary (i'm lucky enough to be paid to work on Debian). One last thing. It's all too common to see people using Ximian GNOME on Debian. As we all know, the Ximian packages are less than cooperative. I think it would be nice to setup an apt source containing all of GNOME 1.4 built for potato. I realize that keeping such a beast up-to-date is non-trivial, so i volunteer to do all the work. How is this different from Ximian GNOME? Because these aren't third-part packages that don't play nice with Debian. They *are* Debian packages, simply recompiled for the current stable release. OK, i'm bracing for flames now :). -- Eric Gillespie, Jr. mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] <*> jabber:[EMAIL PROTECTED] "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." --George Bernard Shaw
