debian/ shouldn't have any subdirectories. Here's how it should go, assuming that your source package is called meschach: upstream: meschach-1.2.3/meschach/... /doc/... /lib/... /... added: meschach-1.2.3/debian/preinst /postinst /prerm /docs /examples /meschach-dev.postinst /meschach-dev.docs And all of the the *{pre,post}{inst,rm} should have a #DEBHELPER# line in them.
