I recently built the linux kernel, and ran across in the "General Setup" options the entry for 'MCA support', which apparently is a bus system similar to PCI or ISA, found only in some IBM PS/2 and laptop machines. I am wondering if your laptop belongs to this set of machines - if so, it would certainly explain the booting problems, since the Debian kernel is built with SCSI 2940 and ATAPI IDE support - but I don't know about the MCA support.
If this is the case, you'll need to build a floppy with a kernel that has support for this. On 09-Dec-98 Geoffrey L.
