I could get it working with:
cd $(BUILDDIR) && $(MAKE) build VERSION=$(VERSION)
LRELEASE=/usr/lib/qt6/bin/lrelease QMAKE=/usr/bin/qmake6 PROVIDER=riseup
TARGET=riseup-vpn
in d/rules. Seems lrelease from qtchooser does not work properly for qt6?
