There might be bugfix-only upstream releases (for good upstreams) or hopelessly-tied-with- unrelated-features releases (for bad upstreams), but at the very least you'd need to point to specific reasons to hurry. But here, you're apparently going with a whole new upstream branch, over the head of the maintainer, who seems to be active -- and all of that without even trying to follow the procedure.
