another fix might be to do something like DEB_HOST_ARCH ?= $(shell dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_ARCH) DEB_HOST_ARCH_OS ?= $(shell dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_ARCH_OS) can you please give it a try? (disclaimer: I didn't read the whole bug) my wild guess is that those two variables are not exported when calling directly "fakeroot debian/rules foo" G.
