The most significant issue is that a source package would contain hundreds of commits, and we cannot expect the FTP-masters to review all of them to ensure that there is nothing that fails to meet DFSG. As I understand it, at the time there was last anyone working on it, git-bundle(1) did not support "shallow bundles" i.e. something like shallow checkouts where only a few commits are included. If that's changed, perhaps progress could be made. Since the bundle would still contain commits that can be merged, cherry-picked, dgit-pushed etc. into upstream and Debian git repos, it would be a big improvement over the current situation with source packages. Informative DebConf BoF on the issue: http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2012/debconf12/low/861_Git_and_Debian_Packaging.ogv -- Sean Whitton
