As far as I'm aware they've never attempted to improve packaging so I doubt they can maintain it properly... Last time I checked upstream packaging was too sloppy for upload. I still have some concerns regarding inferior licensing [1] and I believe that MooseFS is redundant when we already have LizardFS. I'm not against having alternative storage system which may have benefits like availability of different MySQL/MariaDB flavours...
