dpkg-buildpackage cannot create a orig.tar.gz, as something original has already to be there. (Try putting the upstream source code renamed there). In order to dpkg-buildpackage even trying, you need to have a version number ending with a debian-specific number. (The thing after -) Hochachtungsvoll, Bernhard R.
