Since I actually use chess engines (I have used crafty but I switched to the free phalanx), here's another issue with them that bothered me: since debian is a multiuser system, multiple users can possibly run chess program at the same time. What happens to the learning/book file in that case? Are the programs smart enough to correctly handle concurrent access? I strongly doubt it.
