I common approach is to produce one or more packages so that potential advocates can judge your abilities "from afar". If you haven't chosen a project yet <URL:http://bugs.debian.org/wnpp> is a good place to get ideas (look for O, RFA, RFP). Of course, not everybody wants to specialise on package-maintaining. If your interests are more with helping a specific port, the webpage, or qa (for examples) your best bet is to join the relevant list(s) and start working. -- Robbe
