Do you want to become a debian developer or do you want someone else to
maintain the package?
If you're interested in being a dd, you should apply. Follow the
instructions on http://nm.debian.org. Being a Debian developer is
a serious commitment. If you're serious about Debian, then you should
join, otherwise, not.

We have about 700 developers, with quite a few in Italy, I think.

I'm sure you can find someone. The steps on the new maintainer
checklist (http://www.debian.org/devel/join/nm-checklist) do not need
to be done in order. Since it takes, on average, a couple of months
to complete the checklist, you'll have time to find and meet someone.
Everything you need to know is on the web.
