There are some tools discussed on debian-devel that help
finding dependencies, search the archive for them. The most
predictable way, though, is to install a chroot and build the
package in there taking note of the packages you need
to install besides build-essential.

It's nice to have a lintian-clean package, though that is not always
the same as a policy-clean one. I suggest you peruse at least
/usr/share/doc/debian-policy/upgrading-checklist.text.gz
if you haven't already done so.
