I've read the specs for /var/ in the Debian Policy. That's why I came up
with /var/cache, it seems to match my requirements exactly.
There is another reason to go for a cron approach. This software will
often run on servers crunching lots of files. No one will ever notice a
warning about a dictionary being out of date. If there's such a warning
at all. However, files get updated and might introduce new structures
that are not allowed by the out-of-date dictionary and thus will produce
errors.
I've made the update script such that it changes the dictionary file
atomically, making sure there's no moment in time when there's only a
partial dictionary file available.
