For this particular reason I would like to see it implemented in
r-cran.mk. I'm afraid we have some remaining packages hanging around
with this tilde issue. Once using one common - and now tested - code
we can fix them all.

Dirk, would you accept such a patch (or would just simply copy the code from
the rules file you just inspected)?
