Hello Tássia, list,

I saw your presentation on Debconf 24 regarding the installation.
https://debconf24.debconf.org/talks/49-debian-installer-usability-tests-take-2/

Actually there is a third way to install a Debian system, the d-i installer on the live system behaves different from the installer of the netinst image. Both live system installers (d-i and Calamares) copy the content of the live system to the hard disk and then remove a few live-only packages, whereas the netinst image installs a minimal system from scratch.

The live images have some differences compared to the netinst image:

1) The live images are intended to be used offline (which would explain the installation speed, as no network access is required). However, the initial download size differs (ca. 0.8GB vs 3.5GB)

2) The live images have support for all possible languages embedded, whereas the netinst image allows you to select one. A live install will therefore result in a much larger installed system. The way to select a different language/keyboard/etc. in a live image is hidden really well, one has to change the kernel boot parameters, and the documentation is rather cryptic:
https://live-team.pages.debian.net/live-manual/html/live-manual/customizing-run-time-behaviours.en.html#543

3) When using the live image, the desktop environment is preselected, whereas with netinst that question is to be answered during the installation, so this also causes a different user perspective.

With kind regards,
Roland Clobus

PS: The live images and netinst images are automatically tested regularly on openQA, https://openqa.debian.net/
