lock acquisition in every script is a two step process - check then create. it is unnecessary to be split like this in scripts, it creates opportunity for mistakes such as of of these steps to be lost or done in the wrong order for instance. it would be ideal to have a wrapper that makes these two calls which can be used instead. patch to be submitted via salsa soon
