this is bug #612401.

you have three possibilities:

a) build a local plymouth package (with a higher number than stable,
e.g. 0.8.3-9.1+nmu1) and include the following fix:

  http://vcs.progress-linux.org/?p=packages/plymouth.git;a=commitdiff;
  h=2fde8e404a956c57ab0f60724e33e2b4cbf90782

b) build a local plymouth backport from unstable

c) since listing fontconfig-config before plymouth in your package list
will not help (as we do install everything in one single apt call), list
fontconfig-config in your package list, and install plymouth with an
apt-get install call in a local hook.
