if you're replacing the kernel, you need to rebuild all the kernel udebs and d-i initrd and vmlinuz images.

currently not really supported. cody posted a patch to specify a manual d-i repository, this is the way to go.
create a full build of d-i including all udebs, put it into a repository with the needed structure, patch live-helper in the meanwhile codys patch is not merged yet, point to your repo in your config tree, and build the system.
